By: Noah Ortuno Many people already know about Jeff Bezos, the richest man in modern history. With a net worth of about 140 billion, he is one of the richest men to ever exist. Everyone has known billionaires existed, and according to Wikipedia, there are about 2,208 billionaires in the world right now. But have you ever heard of a trillionaire? There are no recorded trillionaires in history, but there might be a possible chance of one existing in the near future. With the new idea of asteroid mining, Space mining could become a real thing — and it could be worth trillions. Minerals that lie in the belt of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter hold mineral wealth equivalent to about $100 billion for every individual on Earth. Quickly evolving technology is making a landing on asteroids an increasing likelihood. The reason it is so valuable is that some asteroids contain nickel, cobalt, and more valuable metals such as gold, platinum, and rhodium. The only problem with asteroid mining is the high cost of spaceflight, unreliable identification of asteroids which are suitable for mining, and ore extraction challenges. For example, SpaceX recently reported that the Falcon 9 rocket launch costs around 57 million. Do you think asteroid mining will make someone the world’s first trillionaire? |
