Bilingualism has many advantages as a student, and an adult. For example, many workplaces highly value bilingualism. Some of those jobs include journalism, tourism, court translators, social workers, immigration specialists, human resource specialists, investment bankers, and risk managers. There are many jobs where bilingualism is highly valued, those were only some. International offices in companies and corporations, make bilingualism a high priority. Communication in the workplace is very important and being bilingual can help you communicate with all your co-workers regardless of the language they speak. People who are bilingual can add it to their resume, and have a better chance of getting the job, even if another monolingual applicant is more qualified. But of course, you must be properly educated to be able to have more job opportunities.
Research shows, being bilingual can help you be more social, this is because you are able to interact with people who speak different languages. Another thing that is beneficial,is you can travel to different places and be able to talk to the locals, your experience will be a lot more fulfilling and fun.
How does bilingualism benefit students? Students, whether native speakers of English or Spanish, achieve high levels of success in both languages. Bilingual students usually pay more attention without being distracted and also improve in the ability to switch from one task to another. According to npr.org, bilingual children usually have a head start on perspective taking and theory of mind. A four year trial found that bilingual students outperform monolingual students in english reading skills by one full school year. Another study showed that bilingual students have higher test scores (if you try) and are happier in school. These are only some of the benefits of bilingualism.
So, if you're bilingual take advantage of it! If you are offered to be taught another language, take it! Who knows, maybe knowing another language may help you out and benefit you later in life.
