Our planet is dying by the minute, but not many people realize it. Pollution effects our air. Litter makes the area dirtier and may cause diseases. Fires make everything covered in ash, it also makes the temperature rise. There are many other reasons why our planet may not be good in a couple of decades, or maybe even years. We need to start saving our only home.
Pollution is from cars, trains and factories. They release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, contributing to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is when the atmosphere becomes thick with gases and substances, trapping the sun’s radiation. From the severe weather change in the arctic, ice caps are thawing. There are millions of tons of ice in the ocean. If it all melts, the sea levels will rise, causing floods. Pollution can lead to acid rain. Acid rain is made from gases like carbon dioxide and sulfur oxide. It will get into bodies of water. Anything living in those bodies of water will be affected by the rain, killing all living organisms. Our water will also be impacted by the rain, leaving us with no clean water.
Littering is a problem because it damages areas where we live, if the trash is severely covered in germs, it may make a disease, contaminating our air, making us sick as well. Henderson Island is located in the southern part of the Pacific ocean. It receives about 3,500 pieces of trash a day. This shows that even untouched places are being damaged by humans as well. The litter is being deposited by a current that is like a conveyor belt. A conveyor belt is a continuous moving band of fabric, or rubber that moves things place to place. This shows that even untouched places are being damaged and we don’t even realize it.
Fires are a big problem in southern California. They mostly happen from the hot, humid land. Wildfires destroy homes, wildlife, and it also pollutes the air. Fires release carbon dioxide. Once the trees are gone, we won’t have anything to reproduce oxygen. Without oxygen we would only have Carbon Dioxide in the air, causing us to eventually die. We breathe in oxygen and let out carbon dioxide. Trees on the other hand, take in carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen. If we don’t pollute it will reduce the greenhouse effect, keeping the atmosphere cooler, lowering the rates of fires. Then without fires we would conserve water, then we wouldn’t have droughts.
Some ways we can positively affect Earth is by using electric cars which reduce pollution, it also reduces acid rain. We could eat organically. The pesticides farmers’ spray on their crops to kill off pests, they also kill off microorganisms that keep carbon contained in the soil. When the microorganisms are gone, carbon is released in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Don’t pre-rinse your dishes, as dirty and gross as it may sound, it will conserve water usage. Any dishwasher that has been sold for the past five years, for five-hundred dollars or more has a dirt sensor to determine how much water to use and how long the cycle should last. These are just a few ways, try some yourself, and find new ways to save our only home.
